Blue took me years to make.
It came to me in a flash, when I was really down. Not mentally - my life really was was horrid. I was keeping pretty optimistic, despite it all...I honestly felt angels around me, helping me...maybe even singing this song in my ear.
Well, the first version of Blue.
However, that song (that came to me when I was down), in retrospect, was...kind of cliché. I recorded it, and it was okay...but the sound
quality was no good.
Then, somehow, just the name Blue stuck with me - and this song came out. I just recorded all the vocal parts, and drums, and bass, and piano, all at once.
There are references to angels...which referred, really, to the first version of the song, and how - it felt, at the time - it had come to me. Blue angels...I couldn't figure out how else I remained happy, and optimistic, in all that sh**.
Still, it was probably two years, or more, before I finally liked Blue - basically, two years of doing the guitar parts, and then mixing... All the guitar parts are done spontaneously, with no thought, just feeling. Which is well and good, as I play only by feel - I have no idea how you are supposed to play, or what chords I'm playing, or notes, etc.!
It's just that mostly, when you do that, it's not good. But if you do that enough times, over enough years, a few good things will remain.
So - everything in this song is a spontaneous effusion of magic. Just, over two year's worth!!!

PS To be clear...not like every day!!! I mean, every month or two, maybe I'd try again...I did, somehow, learn how to play guitar from doing stuff like that. One day, suddenly, I could just do it.
This song is more like the lesson that taught me...
