about
I had this idea I'd pretend I had a job, in Tin Pan Alley, in the early 1900s. This was where the business of songwriting was formed (as opposed to the art of it). As the phonograph record became more popular, the three minute popular song - pop song, pop music - became a money making enterprise.
Anyway, I pretended I walked into an office - not that I'd ever actually done that myself - and pretended I was sitting at a desk - not, thank God, that I've never been forced to do that - and wrote a song as if it were my job.
Funny, that I suppose people in offices wish they could be, as I was, living in a 5 star hotel, off-season but all winter, a hundred yards from the sparkling Mediterranean sea, whereas I, living in such magical and fortuitous luxury, pretended I was in an office in order to write this song.
Those with imaginations just can't help imagining, I suppose...
The photograph (the song artwork) was, btw, taken with two friends - two girls - I met, only because I was in that magical, fortuitous place, pretending I wasn't magical, but being magical - those are some of the nicest people I've ever met, btw...but that's another story...
lyrics
Girls will come
And girls will go
As oceans will ebb, yeah,
The oceans will flow
And when they are gone
The skies seem all gray
But tomorrow there's sunshine
(Or at least the next day)
There once was a dream
That I never knew
Seeing the blue sky only made me feel blue
There once was a dream
That I never had
Even the blue skies made me feel bad
Cuz girls are not like us
But they're like a bus
Soon there's another one there
Yeah, I'm down then in the air
There once was a dream
That I never knew
Floating alone on an ocean of blue
I'm never alone
You're deep in my heart
Oceans away
But never oceans apart
Cuz girls are not like us
But they're like a bus
Soon there's another one there
I'm down then in the air
There was a time I thought love would last forever
There was a time I thought love would never end
That was before I saw what a good thing
It is to have lots of girlfriends
There once was a dream
I never knew
Floating alone on
An ocean of blue
Never alone
You're deep in my heart
Oceans away
But never oceans apart
Cuz girls are not like us
But they're like the bus
Soon there's another one there
I'm down then in the air
Cuz maybe this song is wrong
And maybe another one'll come along
Who's better than the best
Who'll knock out all the rest
